Longer version please.
When we moved in here, in August, we engaged a builder chap to take down
the chimney from the roof and demolish the chimney breast into the
lounge. And plaster gap that was left. He said he'd be along in September
to do it. And he turned up last Saturday.
Not totally his fault. The appointed date in September turned out to be
wet, and you don't want a gaping hole in the roof when it's pouring with
rain. As time passed and winter drew nigh, it seemed less and less like a
good idea to have the work done and we were thinking that maybe early
March would be a great time.
Until last week, when he rang and asked if he could come and do the work.
Well the weather forecast seemed fair(ish) so we thought, why not. They
turned up, kncked the chimney off, sorted the hole in the roof and came
indoors with a large hammer.
Unfortunately, for them and us, the fireplace wasn't a fireplace as such,
but a false 'breast' built entirely of heavy concrete blocks that
enclosed the flue for the gas fire. So the hammer didn't really do
anything except make a noise.
Enter the electric demolition hammer. Noisier, but more effective. They
stayed till six on Saturday when I sent them away. They couldn't come
back for a week, so I decided that I'd finish the knocking down and get
it ready for them to come and plaster. Which I've now done.
But despite my best efforts at sealing doors, the bloody dust is
everywhere. Even in here at the far end of the place, there's a thin film
of dust over everything.
Tomorrow, we start the big clean, because, hopefully, there will be no
more knocking things down. Please.
Was that long enough? ;-)
